Jeou-Shyan, 2011) and ‘traditional agro-food’ (Iglesias et al., 2003). Consequently, the interval of characteristics of traditional food becomes wider and leads to the difficulty in defining the true concept. On top of that, different individuals have dissimilar preferences and motivations toward choices in consumption of traditional food. Essentially, traditional food is such an important medium in order to acknowledge the country’s image, culture, locality and heritage throughout the world. Thus, there is a need for citizens and food industries to maintain and enhance the traditional food industry to sustain them in the global market. As Gustafsson et al. (2005) interpreted traditional food as a product related with a region and lying between cultural heritage and food production which portrayed a contemporary expression. Brassiere (1998) also reviewed individual who eat traditional food can built nutritional psycho-sensorial of the food, personify the nature, identity and emblematically integrate the culture. Long time ago, traditional food only been commercialized in small scale and includes certain places only. Lack of knowledge, technology and interest especially from food industries caused the traditional food market cannot sustain because it needs to compete with the variety of convenience foods and foreign foods in the market. According to Claret et al. (2010), it is inspected in many countries, traditional or local food production mostly realized by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Thus, it is proven in the previous study that before this time traditional food has limited commercialization in the market. Even so, traditional food trend and consumption are seemed to change due to the globalization world with vast information access, closer market, change of consumer lifestyle and food preferences and later drives producers to search for innovative products (Erdogan and Mevhibe, 2010). In the same way, Alcock (1995); and Iglesias et al. (2003) stressed today there is high attention towards traditional food due to food trend and demand. Meanwhile, Claret et al. (2010) highlighted there are not only producers, industries and government that have increased interest of traditional food but also the retailers and consumers. From the consumer’s outlook, the concern is spawned through the positive product images and value whereby it could give high contentment for them (Iglesias et al., 2003). Besides that, Abdul et al. (2011) suggested processing of traditional food is need to be purified according to societal needs. Nevertheless, producers at the same time must consider the originality of the traditional food and not to destroy the authenticity value so that consumer’s appreciation towards the product will be increased. Therefore, preservation of traditional food is needed as it is an important element of culture and heritage (Erdogan and Mevhibe, 2010) as well as it holds tight meanings and successfully emerged the national culinary image of a country (Chen-Tsang and Jeou-Shyan, 2011). 2.3 Consumer Behavior towards Traditional Food Understanding of consumer behavior and perception towards traditional food is crucial in order to guide strategic and policy decisions as well as assist those products in marketing (Kuznesof et al. 1997). From a profound study of consumer behavior of traditional agro-food product by

Iglesias et al. (2003), there is a strong positive relationship between individual’s attitude and quality perceptions toward traditional food. It is proven in the study that individual who has a favorable tendency toward traditional food product pose higher perceptions in each quality element of the product. The authors also stressed that quality aspect relates to organoleptic characteristics of the product, symbolic connotation from the product as well as adoption of traditional production technique should be concerned in order to raise perceived image quality of traditional food. Besides that, it is important for local food producers to be aware of all of these to ensure they are not just providing food but in time together with symbolic benefits such as shows the identity and unique value of the local food. Although from the study, it is found that consumer satisfaction is dependent so much from functional dimension of food quality, but it is essential to bear in mind that characteristics of food actually could give indirect influence on satisfaction of the consumers. Last but not least, definition of traditional food is exactly not fixed to one point only. It might be the different concept for different group of peoples. Furthermore, the concept of traditional food might depends on individual who might overview the elements in traditional food differently as consumer’s perception is a subjective matter and it regularly fluctuates over time (Claret et al., 2003). 2.4 Definition of Authenticity

There are about four required dimensions so as to classify the concept of traditional food: (a) the food produced must carry out the traditional method of processing; (b) show the authentic value of the food and link together the ingredients, recipe, origin of the raw materials and production process; (c) the food must be already available in the market starting during the ancient time either been commercialized in retail stores or restaurants; and (d) the product should have its own originality and valuable in culture and gastronomic heritage on the place where it is produced (Claret et al., 2003). From the study, the authors also highlighted some important elements to define the concept of traditional food such as authenticity of the product, locality, food has been consumed from ancient time, food for occasions, events and season, and others. As the result, there is a strong positive contribution of authentic characters in the definition of traditional food. The original term of authenticity means realness and originality of a product or thing (Molleda, 2011). As Malaysians are multiracial, there are many authentic foods which come from every region in the country. Those popular authentic foods have shown a unique cultural heritage of Malaysia and its help much in food industry. Malaysia is turning out to be a place for tourists to search authentic food experiences (Abdul et al., 2011). Ab Karim and Chi (2010) stressed that authentic food can trigger an individual’s desire to visit the specific travel destinations. Additionally, previous studies stated that there is a positive relationship between authenticity and individual experience. Jeroen and Louise (2008) justified that distinction arises between experiencing authenticity and authentic experience.

The paper of Devault is different in the sense that it concentrates on the implications of gender for the sharing of food preparation and that of other activities and routines within households. She explores how the "pleasure" that many women derive from feeding their families, is deeply inscribed into dominance and subordination in daily life, based on a sense of "natural" gender roles. Even when men participate in household activities, still the woman is seen as the one "who has everything under control", and the one who gives directions. The study is based on participant observation in different h ouseholds. The third section "Food, body, and culture" examines how people in diverse cultures think about fat. Hortense Powdermaker, reviewing anthropological literature, shows that obesity is mainly a "western" problem, explaining fatness and indulgence in eating with compensations of frustrations or neurotic disorders. To the contrary, fat in many cultures symbolizes beauty, power, well being, and fertility. Hilde Bruch shows how body image is connected to self-awareness. She found out that self-awareness differentiates across genders, classes, and ages. She gives an example men who are dissatisfied with their girth when they are young, but in Germany old and upper class men consider their obesity to be a sign of status and power. Elisa J. Sobo examines how in Jamaica fatness is associated with kindness, altruism, and a sociable and giving nature, while skinny people are perceived as being mean and stingy, and how these categories are inscribed into language, for example when pleasant things are called "sweet". The forth section "The political economy of food: commodification and scarcity" links food not only to unequal gender relations, but also to overall social hierarchies and power structures. Most people would define the access to food as the most basic human right. Yet, the authors point out that with capitalism, colonialism, and food commodification, access to food and control over it has become an international key measure of power and the lack of power. Food scarcity,

hunger and malnutrition are often a marker of economic and cultural marginality. The international hierarchy of the "Fist World" vs. the "Third World" is clearly expressed through differential access to food resources. Besides providing a cultural context, a central goal of the book is to highlight the economic realities that underlie food habits. It aims at supporting responsible policies by integrating indigenous knowledge into nutritional understandings. The authors of the papers suggest that nutritionists need to pay attention to sociocultural factors surrounding food in order to respond successfully to hunger issues. Gender in this is context an important factor, since women are more likely to be malnourished than men are. In her paper on Japanese mothers and obentos, lunch boxes that children carry with them to school, Anne Allison shows how one single food item is invested with a meaning of cultural order, gender roles, and ideological symbols. The schoolteacher judges both the mother and the child whether the lunch box is prepared properly, whether the child has eaten all of it, and whether both are able to conform to the rules that the obento embodies. It thus becomes a metaphor of social order and disorder, and a tool of discipline for the state, which intervenes into interfamilial relations and structures gender roles. In his paper, Stephen Mennell differentiates between hunger and appetite, hunger being a body drives which occurs in cycles, and appetite being rather a psychological state of mind. He studies the history how appetite became civilized in European culture through external constraints such as the church, the state, and doctors, and which role famines played throughout history. Janet M. Fitchen talks about malnutrition in the United States, a country, which most people expect that it feeds its citizens well. She elaborates the cultural values and meanings that are attached to the opposition rich-poor on the image of a poor person buying a steak with a food stamp. She shows that domestic hunger often goes unnoticed, because those people who are poor enough to qualify for government food stamps, may be seen in grocery stores, purchasing not only basic food stuffs, but also popular items, such as potato chips, desserts, and beef steaks. With such purchases, low-income people may seek to affirm that they can

live like other Americans, and thus attempt to hide their hunger from the public. At the same time, these foods contribute to their malnutrition, and the public concludes that if poor people can eat steak, they must be neither poor nor very hungry. She argues that the poor, despite their limited economic resources, try to follow dominant American cultural practices, in order to express their membership in society, and food is seen as a tool to "eat oneself into the middle class". On he other hand, there are strong cultural beliefs that the poor "should eat differently because they are different." She shows how the poor try to overcome deprivation by buying popular and heavily advertized junk food, which however damages them more than the affluent who are able to afford both junk food and nutritious food and thus balance its negative effects. Similarly, the poor families she has studied regard food and drink as important to social interaction, as others do. Thus, visits are always accompanied by gestures of offering food, and additionally many families depend on informal reciprocal networks of food sharing. Fitchen explains attitudes toward poor in the context of the American ideology that the individual shapes its destiny, and that poverty hence is the condition of individuals, not of society. Thus, a common myth, which also impacts government policy, is that hunger is the fault of the poor, who are regarded being lazy and feeding themselves wrongly. Being poor and eating a steak is considered culturally "inappropriate" behavior, because it violates the statement of how things ought to be,

it transgresses the definition of being poor, and is interpreted as the proof that the poor are living in luxury. Fitchens study reveals how a poor buying a steak with a food stamp mocks our sense of social order that demands separation of rich and poor. Since this book comprises 28 papers, covering a range of regions and periods, it is a remarkable collection of different approaches to food. If one might find some of them less appealing, they can be skipped by the reader since there are still enough left. Even one who is not particularly interested in food could find the book useful, since it deals in general with cultural meaning, symbolism, political economy, gender, and consumption. I liked especially the papers that dealt with the roots of thinness, since it is such a prevailing paradigm today in many parts of the world, and so heavily promoted by the media as an almost ahistorical and essential ideal. The book shows how bodily dysfunctions can be approached with cultural terms and further examines how access to food is a marker of power and how food can be used as a tool for manipulation and social control. It also provides a broad range of methodology: from fieldwork to historical approaches. Most grocery stores now sell food products labeled organic due to the increase of demand. Organic food became popular in the 1990s and has since remained a trend.

As the journalists backed onto the sidewalk, Ford moved within inches of one photographer, yelling in his face, "Get off my property." The documents suggested police Project Traveller wiretaps also picked up details of meeting between Gawker's John Cook and tipster who claimed to have an "associate" in possession of the video. For Ford, the tough campaigner who leads Ford Nation, it remains to be seen whether the fact that police surveillance teams spent the summer watching him consort with drug and weapons dealers will have an impact on the former Scarlett Heights football player's popularity. Olivia Chow, John Tory, Karen Stintz, and other potential mayoral candidates are waiting in the wings. Ford, who proudly says he has never given up on anything, has warned the election will be a "bloodbath" and that his fellow candidates will "bring up everything." The information to obtain the search warrant will provide Ford critics with much to discuss, everything from allegations of drug purchase and use, to connections to Toronto's underworld. It all began with news of a video shot somewhere near the Dixon Rd. apartments, site of the Project Traveller raids. Ford is pictured alone in the video, shot on a drug dealer's iPhone. A voice off camera goads the mayor into making comments. Justin Trudeau's name is mentioned, and Ford calls him a "fag." The use of Trudeau's name gives a hint to timing of the video, which is also still a mystery. Trudeau was in the news for the Patrick Brazeau boxing match in early 2012, and in the news in early fall 2012 for his leadership battle. Intensely loyal to family and close friends, Ford has surrounded himself with a group of yes men who are equally loyal. When Lisi was arrested, Ford made a point of saying he does not "throw my friends under the bus." But it is a small group, and it was unclear from Wednesday's court hearing if Lisi is still a Ford ally. What is clear is that Ford and Lisi spend, or spent, a terrific amount of time together. They met four times a week outside Lisi's home just east of the Dixon Rd. apartments that were the epicentre of the Project Traveller guns and drugs raids. We now know that Lisi and Mohamed Siad, who wanted to sell the crack video, were close. Did Siad supply drugs to Lisi? That was likely a question police tried to answer. We also know that a six man Toronto

police "spin team" spent hundreds of hours watching and following Lisi and Ford. They used cameras mounted on telephone poles, tracking devices on cars, listening devices and even a Cessna airplane flying low over Etobicoke, so low that people the Star interviewed said there was no doubt the cops were watching. Lisi displayed countersurveillance techniques (frequently stopping his car, turning into random parking lots and driving the other way, etc.) while police followed him. On many occasions they followed him to meetings with Ford in parks. Detectives searched the area after and found empty vodka bottles. After Ford and Lisi met in person, detectives noticed a pattern. Later in the day, Ford, on his drive home, stopped in at the Esso at Edenbridge Rd. and Scarlett Rd., just a few doors east of the Ford home. While Ford was in the Esso station, which houses his favourite Tim Hortons, Lisi would drive up in his Range Rover and place a package into Ford's Escalade, then drive off. The Range Rover itself is an interesting story. It is owned by a former drug client, now straight, of Lisi's. In return for cash and covering the monthly payments, the man leased the Range Rover for Lisi and not too long ago arranged to get him a new set of plates "which I need because of all this Ford s---." Despite witnessing dozens and dozens of interactions between Ford and Lisi, officers never once stepped in to make an arrest. As a result, police lack direct evidence that what Ford and Lisi were trading those many days ago were drugs and money. Police photographed Mayor Rob Ford in multiple secret meetings with an alleged drug dealer, documents released Thursday morning say. Mayor Rob Ford was the target of a police investigation that witnessed him taking part in more than 100 meetings with known drug dealer Alexander Sandro Lisi, according to a police document filed in court. Ford was the target of the investigation, according to the police documents that formed part of the search warrant application in the case. "Detective Sergeant Giroux was detailed to investigate the matter of the Mayor Ford allegations and to substantiate any of the claims that have been made," the document said. Those allegations began with the news, published by the Star and Gawker, of the Ford video. The details of an extensive police investigation into Ford's drug activities come six months after two Toronto Star reporters saw a video showing the mayor, obviously impaired, smoking what appears to be crack

cocaine and making homophobic and racist slurs. In a heavily censored portion of the document, police said that the day after the world learned news of the video that appeared to show Ford smoking crack cocaine, top homicide detective Sgt. Gary Giroux was assigned to "investigate the existence of a cellular phone containing a video of Ford smoking crack cocaine." Ford emerged from his home around 9:45 a.m. and walked toward waiting reporters and photographers yelling "Get off my driveway," before getting into his SUV and driving away. Multiple police surveillance photographs that pinpoint Ford or his assistant with Lisi have been released as part of the ITO (information to obtain a search warrant). Three copies of the now infamous photo of Rob Ford standing in front of 15 Windsor Road with Anthony Smith, Monir Kasim and Mohammad Khattak are contained in the documents. The file also includes a picture of the garage door alone on which police have circled recognizable markings in the photo featuring Ford. Police surveillance captured Ford and Lisi conduct clandestine meetings with a mysterious package. Police watched in the early evening of July 11 as the two arrived separately to an Esso station just 350 metres from Ford's home. The gas station's security footage shows Ford arriving in his black Escalade around 5:40 p.m. and heading straight to the station's bathroom. As the mayor's in the washroom, security cameras caught Lisi drive up. He appears to be texting someone on his phone while holding a manilla

envelope. Lisi entered the Esso and "searches around the refrigerators," police said, before picking up a few Gatorades and a bag of chips. Lisi left the store. Security cameras caught him standing near the mayor's vehicle, holding the envelope. "Lisi appears to be looking around, possibly scoping out the area," the document said. "He walks along the passenger side of the Mayor's Escalade and walks out of (the security camera's) frame. He is not seen again." Around the same time, Ford leaves the washroom and buys a Gatorade and pack of gum. Ford leaves the store about 10 minutes after arriving. On June 28, Toronto police Detective Shertzer and Detective Constable Davey interviewed a former member of Ford's staff, Chris Fickel. According to the documents, Fickel told police that the mayor and Lisi spent a lot of time together until "media release events [crack video scandal]." "Fickel does not know where the mayor got marijuana from but has heard that 'Sandro' may be the person who provides the mayor with marihuana and possibly cocaine." Fickel told investigators that Ford met Lisi through Don Bosco football coach Payman Abdoodowleh, a man with numerous convictions including three assault convictions, a break and enter and assautl with a weapon. The former staffer added that Aboodowleh "said that he was mad at Lisi because he was fueling the mayor's drug abuse." A visibly angry Ford shouted at reporters outside his home this morning: "What don't you understand? Get off my property." Ford only said "Thank you" in response to questions about whether he is the focus of a police drug investigation into Lisi. As the journalists backed onto the sidewalk, Ford moved within inches of one photographer, yelling in his face, "Get off my property." Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair will make an announcement about Project Brazen 2 the investigation launched to investigate allegations about Ford that resulted in the arrest of Lisi. The announcement was made just moments after a search warrant related to the investigation was released to the public.

Most people know that their bodies are made up of a great deal of water, but may be surprised to learn that number is about 70 percent and yet studies show we dont drink enough to replenish what we need.Other drinks to be sure, but water? Not even close. Emphasizing this point is a study conducted by Dr. Alyson Goodman for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention that suggests one in 10 Americans drinks no water every day.Zero.She calls these results mindboggling. Water is vital for life, says Goodman. Many health risks decrease when you drink plain water. Goodman believes that the non-water drinkers are getting their water from coffee, sodas, food and other sources, which might theoretically be okay, except for the calories that are associated with those other liquids.According to Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, in order for a body to function well, it must have water, and in order for it to function properly, it must continuously work to maintain a proper pH or chemical balance. To this end, the benefits of drinking water cant be measured (preventing dehydration chief among them), however, adding alkaline water to a diet already rich in nutrient dense foods can help maintain a bodys pH balance, as well as aid in avoiding cancer, weak bones, premature aging and fatigue. An unbalanced pH can force your body to borrow important minerals from your vital organs and bones

in order to remove excess acid, Baroody says.Water such as Alkame Water not only helps regulate these important pH balances in the body, but can boost the immune system, improve cardio-respiratory function and enhance energy levels. It even fights oxidative stress and free radicals.Unlike its tap and bottled counterparts, Alkame Water goes through a process called micro-clustering, in which the molecules that make up water are broken up into smaller clusters, allowing body cells to absorb the water much faster, and in turn hydrate you more efficiently. If someone were to ask me, What is the one thing I can do to have better health? Then the answer would be simple: Start drinking alkaline, ionized water, says Dr. Robert O. Young, PhD, author of the The pH Miracle. Its the inevitable question were asked by our families and ourselves: Whats for dinner? and copyright owners, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. The conference was heavily bias for U.S. corporate interests, including Time Warner, Viacom, and The Walt Disney Company, for whom international copyright is critical. Conclusion Addressing copyright issues in an electronic age represents a huge challenge. The size and scope of the copyright problems are unlikely anything society has dealt with in the past. The basic question is how to design frameworks that will protect access and fair use while ensuring that the incentive to produce and make intellectual and artistic work available in the Cyberspace. Too much regulation in either direction could have disparaging results. Adequate Intellectual Property Right (IPR) protection is a vital element in the development of high technology, high value-added production, and the professional services. The government of Taiwan is fully aware of this fact. They understand that they must make revisions to its current copyright laws in order to strengthen the degree to which IPR is protected in Taiwan. Over the years, Taiwan government has made progress, the Patent Law has undergone two revisions, the Trademark Law three revisions, and the Copyright Law five revisions. As for enforcement, apart from increasing the penalties for infringement of rights and increasing the power of Customs officials to inspect suspected counterfeit shipments, the MOEA has also created the Anti-Counterfeiting Committee with responsibility for processing charges of piracy. Awareness-raising and training in IPR issues

have also been emphasized by the government over the last few years. Also as to keep up with the development of its hi-tech industries, Taiwan has continually upgraded its IP system to bring it in the line of international standards. Software Related Piracy Worldwide Ethical Issues Society becomes more dependent on computers and computer networks. We also become more and more vulnerable to computer misuse - that is, to misuse of computers and computer networks by human beings. It has created a wide range of social problems. Among them, software piracy is one of the most immediate problems need to be solved around the whole world. Large-scale piracy became common after the arrival of the personal computer and packaged software in the late 1970s. This development put hardware and software into hands of individuals at reasonable cost and enable them to perform several different tasks at the same time because a number of programs are integrated together on a single storage disk. Unfortunately, because the original versions of these software packages are very expensive, the temptation to pirate a copy has proved too much for million of users and would-be users. Many people claim that Asia is the king of coping. Software piracy is part of the way of life. Most estimates suggest that about 90% of all software in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and India has been copied. It is common practice Asia to purchase a computer complete with a variety of bootlegged programs already installed on the hard disk. Asian companies routinely buy one or two legitimate copies of a piece of software and duplicate hundreds of copies for their employees. Pirated

software, music, and videos sell in the street markets for a fraction of the normal retail price. Most people in Asia see coping software as a legitimate way to cut costs and expenses. In China, copying of all Western software products has been condoned for years by their government. In recent case, thousands of fake holograms on counterfeit Microsoft software being sold from Taiwan was traced to a Chinese government-owned factory in the special Shenzen economic zone near Hong Kong. In 1991, China announced that it would join the Berne Convention, the international pact governing copyright protection, and in 1992 China agreed to U.S. demands that it outlaws the theft of software when it amended its copyright law. As a result, Microsoft entered the Chinese for the first time. However, doubts remained about what precisely both moves would mean in real terms. If mainland China is tops for the quantity of software copied, Taiwan is probably tops for quality. Long known as the counterfeiting capital of the world, Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, is home to master forgers who apparently are able to produce flawless copies of Western computer diskettes, packaging, movies, video games and even licensing agreements that have fooled all but expert computer company investigators. In Hong Kong, about seven or eight copies of well known packages are thought to exist for every legitimate copy sold, while the counterfeiting of goods of all kinds is estimated to be worth $1 billion a year to the Singapore economy alone. Meanwhile, in Thailand, where 97% of software has been copied, a recent Association of Thai Computer Industry survey put personal hardware sales at over three times of software sales. Although anti-piracy laws do exist in these countries, they are rarely successfully enforced and fines are usually minimal. Beside Asia, software related piracy problems are also serious in Middle Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Lotus claims to lose as much as $25 million annually in foregone revenue as a result of

copying in the Middle East alone. In Latin America, pirate software programs are openly on sale in markets from Peru to. Anti-piracy laws are almost nonsexist, the local government seems unlikely to take legal actions to curb counterfeiting when know that the results are so rewarding. In the past, software was illegal in communist Eastern Europe because of the Western bans, but in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, IBM offered an amnesty to software pirates in the form of a modest fee to legalize all their pirate programs and an exchange service that enabled users to trade in their pirate program for legitimate purchased at a discount. Over the years, giant software companies have keep close eyes on the worldwide piracy issues, however they could do to prevent those piracy acts are too limited- and too costly. As a result, the U.S.-based Software Publishers’ Association (SPA) estimates that software piracy is costing U.S. software producers between $10 billion and $12 billion a year worldwide - part of an estimate $60 to $80 billion a year lost to U.S. companies through the theft of intellectual property of types. The idea of IPR has been around since the Middle Ages, and the current forms of legal protection have evolved over centuries. According to the Untied Nations’ Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), intellectual property is defined as the rights to the results of intellectual activity in the industry, scientific, literary, or artistic. Generally speaking, copyright law has traditionally protected forms of literary expression. However, computer software is a new king of entity that presents major challenges for the law. Chief among these are how we define ownership of this form of

As history has shown Washington has always been on the hunt for campaign contributions and big donations. What the difference is now, is that this perpetual hunt for money has gone from a basic need to run a campaign to an obsessed addiction for more power and money. The time to act in congress is now, with the recently completed election cycle of 2010 setting historic expenditure records and a fresh new federal legislative session, waiting any longer for change will only damage any hope of a positive outcome. With recent news coverage on polls showing that the American people are well aware of the Citizens United decision and its impact on fiscal politics, how the government seems to have lost its way and connection with the average American citizen and just how far the big spenders in congress are willing to go to stretch the line of the laws and legal cheat just to keep their seat and the money flowing into their pockets. In present society politics is at its dirtiest and most cynical, evenly chipping away what our constitution stands for and our democratic values. I cannot in any way say what the future will hold for this uphill battle for disclosure and regulations on campaign finance. But I do know that the time for action is slowly passing by and if something is not done soon I fear the U.S. government may be lost to all and any forms of revival. Our government would basically have to start a new throwing everything off balance. Our government is standing on thin ice not only with its own citizens but also with foreign relations, it only takes waiting a day to long until the ice finally breaks and the American government sinks. In his novel Vanity Fair, William Thackeray exposes and examines the vanities of 19th century England. His characters pursue wealth, power, and social standing, often through marriage or matrimony. The present essay looks at Thackeray's use of the institution of marriage in Vanity Fair to comment on how these vanities often come at the expense of the true emotions of passion, devotion, and love. Parental Ambitions In Vanity Fair, money is central to nearly all of the characters' relationships. Thackeray connects England's merchant families, the lesser nobility, and the high aristocracy through money and matrimony, and parents are frequently the chief negotiators in these business transactions. Mr. Osborne is perhaps the novel's most avaricious parent; money and social eminence are all-important to Mr. Osborne, and he is willing to sacrifice his children's happiness to connect his family name with these vanities. He forbids his daughter Jane to marry an artist with whom she has fallen in love with, swearing to her "that she should not have a shilling of his money if she made a match without his concurrence" (p416). For Mr. Osborne love has little to do with matrimony, and marriage is simply a transaction that should increase family wealth and prestige. This concept was by no means uncommon during the 19th century: the rise of industrialism and colonialism meant an influx of wealth into England, and marriage was seen by many as a way of either rising in station or cementing business ties. This latter theme is seen in Mr. Osborne's interference in his son George's relationship with Amelia. Their courtship is arranged, the "two young people [having] been bred up by their parents" (p38) for love and marriage. George and Amelia's relationship is encouraged because of the business connection between Mr. Sedley and Mr. Osborne, and their feelings are not really an issue to be considered. As Mr. Sedley's fortunes fall, Mr. Osborne questions George if the match is not now beneath the Osborne family's station: "Why shouldn't you marry higher than a stockbroker's daughter, George, that's what I want to know?" (p124). George replies that it is a "family business," and that "you and Mrs. Sedley made the match a hundred years ago" (p 124). The terminology of business is frequent in discussions of marriage in Vanity Fair, and money, not love, is the motive for matrimony. Mr. Osborne states these feelings very clearly to his son: "Unless I see Amelia's ten thousand down you don't marry her" (p 126). Mr. Sedley's misfortunes are a convenient way for Mr. Osborne to force the cancellation of the engagement, for he sees an opportunity to marry his wealth (which was only acquired through Mr. Sedley's facilitation) through George to Miss Swartz, a young heiress with connections to the aristocracy. It is important to notice that these aspirations are Mr. Osborne's and not George's, for George ignores his father's order to marry Miss Swartz, believing that he is in love with Amelia. Thackeray's characterization of Mr. Osborne shows us how love can be subverted by parental aspirations for the many vanities that exist. The Economics of Matrimony Parental scheming for wealth and power is of course only one side of the issue of marriage for money. Thackeray's characters are often only too willing to forsake true love for money and social eminence. The arrangement between Mr. Osborne's daughter Maria and Fredrick Bullock centers on this theme, with the author noting that in such a marriage whom you marry is quite irrelevant. Maria would just as equally marry Frederick's father: "...She would have taken Bullock Senior, just the same, her mind being fixed as that of a well-bred young woman should be, --- upon a house in Park Lane, a country house at Wimbledon, a handsome chariot, and two prodigious tall horses and footmen, and a fourth of the annual profits of the eminent firm of Hulker and Bullock..." (p 113). Again, love is unimportant, and money is the issue upon which such engagements revolve. Frederick, too, is more concerned with the "economics" of matrimony: George being dead and cut out of his father's will, Frederick insisted that the half of the old gentleman's property should be settled on his Maria, and indeed, for a long time, refused "to come to the scratch" (it was Mr. Frederick's own expression) on any other terms. Osborne said Fred had agreed to take his daughter with twenty thousand, and he should bind himself to no more.... [Fred] thought himself infamously swindled by the old merchant, and for some time made as if he would break off the match altogether. (p412) Fred consents to marry Maria only after his business partners have persuaded him of "the chances of the further division of property" (p412) at the death of Mr. Osborne. Theirs is certainly not a match based on love, but it is perhaps a perfect match, for both Maria and Frederick are willing to sell the ideal of true or romantic love for money. Love has no place in the business of marriage, but as we shall see, Thackeray is very clear in pointing out that happiness is frequently sacrificed in the transaction. The Pursuit of the Vanities The relationship of Sir Pitt Crawley and Lady Crawley is another based on the pursuit of the vanities. There is certainly little happiness in their marriage: Sir Pitt is generally rude to Rose, he often leaves her completely alone, and he frequently hits her. Thackeray contrasts their relationship with what might have been had Rose given her hand in youth to a truer, purer love: O Vanity Fair --- Vanity Fair! This might have been, but for you, a cheery lass; Peter Butt and Rose a happy man and wife, in a snug farm, with a hearty family, and an honest portion of pleasures, cares, hopes, and struggles: --- but a title and a coach and four are more precious than happiness in Vanity Fair.... (p83). Here Thackeray hints that the lower classes, far less concerned with social standing, perhaps are happier than those with wealth and power.
